About GrowGood
GrowGood is a nonprofit employment social enterprise based in Southeast Los Angeles. Since 2011, GrowGood has been working at the intersection of food justice, environmental sustainability, holistic wellness, and job readiness by using urban agriculture to provide access to high-quality produce, jobs, skills training, and nature-based mindfulness programs for under-resourced communities. GrowGood operates a 1.5-acre regenerative urban farm adjacent to The Salvation Army’s Bell Shelter, the largest homeless shelter in the US. GrowGood’s Bell Farm features a ½-acre of produce crops, an orchard with 70 fruit trees, a cut-flower garden, a commercial greenhouse, and community gathering spaces
Job Description
Board Member will support the work of GrowGood and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by staff and Executive Director (ED), the Board-ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:
Serving as a trusted advisor to the ED as s/he develops and implements GrowGood’s strategic plan.
Participating actively in fundraising efforts including outreach and soliciting of both operating and capital funding from corporate, institutional and individual donors.
Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by GrowGood for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics; reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings.
Approving GrowGood’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities.
Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the ED.
Assisting the ED and Board Chair in identifying and recruiting other Members.
Partnering with the ED and other Members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out.
Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments.
Representing GrowGood to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization.
Ensuring GrowGood’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities GrowGood serves.
Board Meeting Attendance
GrowGood holds meetings monthly. Most of the meetings are held virtually, with one meeting per quarter held in person at the GrowGood farm, where attendance is strongly suggested. From time to time, board meetings are held via phone or email. Attendance at all board meetings is not mandatory, although failure to consistently attend meetings and/or participate in board-related efforts may be grounds for removal from the Board.
Stewardship
Member is a representative of GrowGood at the highest level, and conduct in all public affairs should be representative of GrowGood’s mission.
Give / Get Policy
Each Member is expected to give or “get” a minimum of $250 annually in cash. “Get” can be in the form of private donations, ticket sales for events, or similar.
Project Leadership
GrowGood is an entrepreneurial organization, and each Member is expected to take ownership of one or more strategic projects.
